After two years of being virtual, the Academy of Management Annual Meeting will take place in Seattle, Washington, from Friday, August 5th to Tuesday, August 9th, 2022. Inspired by the Vancouver Visitor Guide by David Clough (UBC), I have created a quick guide for AOM attendees.

The weather will be wonderful during the summer! "The mountain" will be "out" (when people say "the mountain” in Seattle, it means Mt. Rainier), and it won't get dark until 8 or 9 pm, so I hope you make the most of it! Spending a couple more days before or after the conference exploring the Pacific Northwest would be a great idea.

What to Do in Seattle
You'll be able to find a lot of visitor information about Seattle (here, here, and here). Here are a few spots you might enjoy while attending AOM in Seattle. The places listed below are all within 10-minute walking distance of the Seattle Convention Center (Seattle Center is a bit far, but it only takes a few minutes if you take the monorail). If you have a bit more time, please check out [More Things to Do in Seattle and Beyond].
  • Pike Place Market is only a 10-minute walk from the Seattle Convention Center. It is one of the oldest and largest operating markets in the United States. While you're there, check out the infamous (and gross) gum wall and the fish tossing that happens at the fish market, and take a photo in front of the original Starbucks (although it's not actually the first Starbucks location). The line to get inside the Starbucks is usually too long, so feel free to skip it. If you want coffee, I recommend Storyville instead. Get a tasty sample at Beecher's Handmade Cheese, and check out the excellent waterfront view at Old Stove Brewing if you can find a seat.
  • The Spheres (at Amazon) is about an 8-minute walk from the Seattle Convention Center. It is open to the public on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, so you're only chance to visit during AOM is August 6th. Reservations open 15 days in advance, so make sure to book your visit! While you're there, grab a cup of coffee and a doughnut from General Porpoise and buy something from Amazon Go.
  • Seattle Central Library is about an 8-minute walk from the Seattle Convention Center. It has a unique Rem Koolhaas architecture and design, and you'll get great photos (it is considered one of the most "Instagrammable libraries"). You can also get some work done in the reading room on the 10th floor.
  • Starbucks Reserve Roastery is about an 8-minute walk from the Seattle Convention Center. It opened back in 2014, but it's still worth a visit. Check out the roasting area, specialty menus, and souvenirs. There can be a long line during the summer, so time your visit carefully. If you don't want to wait too long, I recommend visiting Victrola Coffee on the next block.
  • Take a monorail at the Westlake Center (about a 4-minute walk from the Seattle Convention Center) to visit Seattle Center. The monorail runs every 10 minutes and takes only a few minutes to get to Seattle Center. There's a lot to do once you get there! Check out the famous Space Needle, visit the International Fountain, and check out Chihuly Garden and Glass. The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPoP) is also a great attraction if you like music and want to see the Hendrix collection and more. Make sure to get a cup of coffee at the Caffe Vita KEPX! From the Seattle Center, you can walk another 10 minutes to get to the Olympic Sculpture Park.

What to Eat and Drink in Seattle
Seattle is known for its Pacific Northwest cuisine with a focus on local seafood, fresh produce, cheese, and wine. Also, You can't really talk about Seattle without talking about coffee (Fun fact: I only started drinking coffee after moving to Seattle). Instead of trying to recommend a few places, I think these lists are pretty much comprehensive in capturing what's "in."
  • Seattle's 100 best restaurants (as of May 2022)
  • Where to get unforgettable cups of coffee in Seattle (as of March 2022)
  • 16 Seattle Boba shops worth a sip (as of March 2022)
